HAVING PROBLEMS REGISTERING - anyone?

The Dirty Biking Forum 'auto signup' feature seems to not be working for some people who have been trying to register!

Firstly I would like to thank people for trying to register and especially the ones that have emailed me to report the problem.

When people try to register, the forum sends out a confirmation email to the user which they must reply to. This confirms your email address as being genuine.

It appears that some people are not receiving this email !!

In some cases this could be due to spam filters on individuals own PC's (being set to high) or on their ISP internet provider blocking the automated email.

To try and overcome this problem I do keep selecting everyone who has applied, and resent the confirmation email once again to the address they provided.

I still got contacted by many to say no email arrived.

There could be a few reasons for this...
I have noticed that some people have mistyped their email addresses -
Real example: I have heard of 'tiscali', but not 'yscali'.!!

If you have entered incorrect info, you may have to re-register.

Next...
On my own hotmail account for instacnce, the email is sent into the 'JUNK' email folder as soon as it arrives!! (Good old hotmail eh!)

So Please check to see if the forum registration confirmation email is going directly into your 'junk' email folder, or whether their 'spam' filter is set to fierce and blocking it.
...you could try winding the spam filter down just for registration, as the email will/should be sent to you easily within 10 minutes. Then put it your spam filter back to its normal setting.

If the worse comes to the worse, please email me (dirtybiking@hotmail.co.uk) - with the heading DirtyBiking Registration - 'your name here' - and I will enter you manually.
(Obviously something I would rather not have to do, because it will cause delays when I am away. - and also of course it will make a lot of extra work for me :o( )

Anyway - many appologies to those who have already been inconvenienced - and yes we are missing a lot of you on the forum, - I know because I can see that lots of you have tried registering!

But like I say - if you are having difficulty registering to use the forum please email me on dirtybiking@hotmail.co.uk

Hi Bri

It is a forum grading list.

When people first use the forum they are classed as a 'Newbie'.
Then upgrade to -
Sportsman
Member
Old Hand
and finally when they have been around here a long while and have helped a lot, they become a 'Geezer'.

I was going to use Sportsman, Clubman, Expert, Championship originally, but decided against it for various reasons. The thought of leaving Sportsman in untill someone has used the forum a bit I must admit 'amused me' - sorry about that - its only a temporary affliction!

So here's my current list:
Newbie
Sportsman
Member
Old Hand
Geezer

Any suggestions for a better one welcome?
...mind you they may not be used!!! - oh, and keep them clean :o(

3 MASSIVE PROBLEMS...

Hi Scar

Yes it is sad that the forum has dropped off as much as it has, but I had 2 massive problems that I had no choice but to deal with.

Problem 1 )
The website was getting so much traffic that the ISP 'force9' kept wiping it off. This was starting to happen twice a month and I was spending ages rebuilding it. They just couldn't handle up to a half million hits a day !

So after advertising the web address as
www.dirtybiking.co.uk  (and also www.dirtybiking.com ) for over 5 years, even though thousands still had the old force 9 address bookmarked. I finally had to move it to the new location to keep it online.

Problem 2 )
Also I hoped that Chrsitmas - being the quietest period on the website - would be the best time to improve the forum, by adding extra facilities. (Let's face it this new concept does allow photos and videos and many other great new features. ) ...and also it would help me keep off any idiots who constantly risked ME going to jail. Because as the webmaster the buck stops with me, EVEN THOUGH they were always to cowardly to use their name when insulting someone!

On two separate occaisions last year I was threatened with court actions against me. AND I never even made a nasty comment. Fortunately after I phoned the people concerned and spoke to them appologising that the comments had been missed by me and assuring them they would be removed instantly, no further action against me was taken.

So you see I had no choice but to make changes.

Problem 3 )
Since the new forum has been up and running, many people have either not bothered to register (maybe they still only wanted to hide and insult people no doubt.). Hundreds of other genuine people have had difficulty registering. Because their email keeps treating my acceptance as junk mail - or they have incorrectly entered their email address - which is needed for confirmation.

I have offered that if people email me personally I would manually enetr them - and a few have. But sadly there are many more that have just not bothered.

If anyone can give me a good reason why I should go to jail, or pay a huge fine so that others can hide and insult - normally those that work so hard to do good for our sport, I and many others would no doubt find the answer very interesting.

...and maybe if they would also like to send me a cheque for £1000 I may go back to taking the risk ;o)

PS: There are hundreds of wannabe forum users still in the 'pending' area. I keep writing to them , but get no reply !!

Hi Biker. I too appreciate your efforts and had no idea of your problems.
Hopefully it will pick up because as I stated it was and hopefully will be a great place again.

Thanks for publishing the full story Biker - I just hope your detractors read it and understand!

I am flummoxed by people having difficulties registering etc. The Devon "open to everyone" trail riding forum uses exactly the same forum software and is incredibly busy by comparison yet with far fewer actual trail riders than there are SW enduro riders.  Something real odd going on.

Hi Grumpy

Yes me too.

But I do know a very high percentage of users still had the very old biker.force9 URL bookmarked - even after 5 years with the new address!!!
- So its possible they think the site has vanished!

Good idea br!

Also, I would have thought the event organisers must appreciate your effort and could put a link on their websites and a few lines in their regs?
